We at the TCA have been following the interesting development at Anfi’s Tauro Beach Project in Gran Canaria over the past year as it has run into major issues.  We have reported on the Mayor of Mogan, whom was put under scrutiny due to the possible unlawful acts carried out with regards to expired licences.  The full story can be read here.  The head of the coastal authority was also forced to step down in respect of his public wrongdoing and forgery of documentation to allow the project to go ahead.

There had also been floods and other problems with the residents on the first line of the sea with flooding and repairs needed to their houses.  Last week saw another damaging weather attack, with high tides, and winds taking a large part of the beach back into the sea.  It just seems that it is one thing after another with this project, and the monetary damage so far has been around 6 million euros to Anfi themselves.

The issue that the project seems to have is that the original, natural, pebble beach, which had a rather large embankment of pebbles, was a natural barrier for the waves, and so in turn the water did not reach the dwellings close to the coast.  However, a new flatter shape has been given to the new sandy beach, which is now being plagued by any wind and waves that the beach regularly experiences.

This past few weeks have seen the beach suffer further losses, the canary news has reported that the beach has now lost a lot of its sand and has been left pretty bare again.  We have to wonder if this project will ever come to an end?  The worrying thing is that the timeshare owners themselves end up paying for these mistakes, through increasing maintenance and further expenses.

Is there a solution in the pipeline?  That still has not been confirmed!  Possible solutions would be to add a man-made wave breaker just off the shore, but many think this may have a further impact on the protected marine area here.  It would certainly be a costly addition to the project for Anfi, presumably.  There is still a lot up in the air with regards to this project, and the Guardia Civil are continuing their investigations with the real fear for Anfi being that the project may be brought to a halt.  This would leave them with a great loss, and no beach to show for it…
